[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] “Jeopardy!” host and one of the most notable faces in American television, Alex Trebek, said he has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in a video message revealed on Wednesday. The host vowed to fight the illness amid its low survival rate.

Earlier this week, Trebek posted a video on YouTube in which he said he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. "Now normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease."

The advanced stage of the disease indicates that it has already spread to other body parts, according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. It added that the survival rate of five years for the illness at the said stage is only three percent.

Reuters reported that the low survival rate has been related to the fact that less than 20 percent of tumors in the pancreas are confined in the said organ during a patient's diagnosis.

Trebek joked about his promise to beat the illness, saying that he has to since the terms of his contract state that he has three more years of being the 'Jeopardy!' host. The TV host has hosted the game show since 1984 and has been known for being straight-faced while making witty banters with contestants during the show.

Trebek has been given five Daytime Emmy awards for being an outstanding game show host and was awarded an Emmy lifetime achievement award in 2011, according to Reuters. He was hospitalized after a heart attack in 2007 and 2012. He then had surgery in 2017 to remove blood clots in the brain after being injured in a fall and was suspended from taping episodes until he returned in 2018.
