[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] The Supreme Court of Myanmar will be ruling on an appeal on Tuesday from two Reuters journalists jailed for breaching a colonial-era official secrets law, in a case that led to questions surrounding the country's shift to democracy.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been in detention for 16 months since being arrested in December 2017 as they were investigating the murder of 10 Rohingya Muslim men during a military crackdown in the western region of the Southeast Asian country.

Reuters reported that Myanmar's top court included the case of the two journalists on its website and Facebook page list on Sunday. Their arrest was made due to the government's accusations of the reporters being in possession of confidential documents that could have put national security in jeopardy.

Their lawyer, Khin Maung Zaw, outlined the ground for their appeal filed in March. He cited that there no sufficient proof of the crime and that there was evidence that the pair were set by the authorities. Last year, a policeman stated to a lower court that officers planted secret documents on the journalists.

A district court judge in Yangon—the country's largest city—ruled that the two reporters were guilty under the Official Secrets Act in September 2018. They were sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, Reuters stated. It added that the High Court in Yangon rejected an earlier appeal filed in January 2019.

The decision on their imprisonment triggered an outcry from various parties: advocates of press freedom, Western diplomats, and even world leaders. This outcry added pressure on the shoulders of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel laureate who took over power in 2016 as the country transitions to a military rule.

The news agency further stated that Wa Lone and Kyaws Soe Oo's investigation was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting last week after being completed and published by their colleagues in 2018.
