[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] A crowd of about 22,800 people gathered in the streets of Hong Kong last Sunday to protest the rights of political dissidents to not be taken to mainland China for extradition. According to them, this will only put Hong Kongers in danger of being accused of violating laws that may just be “made up” by the Chinese government to convict them.

According to a report by The Guardian, the protest happened in central Hong Kong and was carried out specifically in question of the city’s security bureau, through chief executive Carrie Lam, who decided to carry out the request by China.

Alex Ho, a Catholic school teacher during the protest, said that if Hong Kongers are brought to mainland China for the said extradition, the legal system of China might be manipulated by the government in order to imprison people under the made up laws “and say that people did whatever they want.”

Ho is not alone in this thinking. Many in Hong Kong feel the same way, so much so that those who don’t normally go on protests were present on Sunday, if only to fight against the unjust ramifications of the ordinance.

Some protesters from Hong Kong were even those who participated in the 1989 protests when students demanded democracy from the Chinese government.

A former lawmaker, Margaret Ng, also urged people at the protest to gain support from other countries in the world, as Hong Kong intends to keep its freedom from the bigger mainland China, which they yearn deeply to not be saddled with.

Already, it’s driving activists fighting against the system outside the country. Such is the case with Lam Wing-kee who fled to Taiwan just last week for being wanted when he smuggled “gossipy books about Chinese leaders.” In a correspondence with Bloomberg, Lam shared that his chances of coming back to Hong Kong will be difficult if Hong Kong passes the said ordinance, especially since the Chinese government recognizes him as someone who has been charged with a crime.
